PI (Polarization Index) and DAR (Dielectric Absorption Ratio) are diagnostic metrics measured during an insulation resistance (Megger) test. They determine the health of electrical insulation in motors, transformers, and cables by comparing how insulation resistance changes over time as a steady DC test voltage is applied.
What causes low PI/DAR readings?
If an insulator is wet, cracked, or heavily contaminated with dust/oil, the resistance reading will flatline early, resulting in a ratio close to 1. A low value serves as an early warning of an impending electrical short or equipment failure.
