 The  Fluke 1630-2 FC Earth Ground Clamp is a specialized tool that measures earth ground resistance and AC leakage current on multi-grounded systems without needing to drive auxiliary test stakes. By using a "stakeless" testing method, technicians can safely and quickly test live systems, avoid downtime, and work in hard-to-reach areas 

Why Test

 Earth ground testing is crucial to verify that the grounding electrode system is of low enough resistance to safely direct dangerous surges into the earth rather than through equipment or people. 

 

Because soil conditions fluctuate with moisture and temperature, earth ground testing should ideally be done immediately after installation and then periodically tracked over time. If your test results are too high, you can typically lower them by driving longer or multiple, interconnected ground rods.

  • Sensitive Equipment & Telecommunications: 5  Ohms or less is highly recommended to protect delicate electronics and prevent signal interference. 


  • Standard Residential & Commercial: The National Electrical Code (NEC) specifies an absolute maximum of 25 Ohms for a single electrode, requiring an additional rod if resistance is higher. However, the IEEE and NFPA recommend aiming for 5 Ohms or less. 


  • Industrial Substations & Lightning Protection: These require the lowest possible resistance, typically 1 Ohm or less, to safely dissipate massive fault currents into the earth.
