Equipotential bonding

What is Equipotential Bonding & why is it important?

 Equipotential bonding is the process of electrically connecting all exposed and extraneous conductive materials (like metal pipes, structural frames, and equipment) to establish the same electrical voltage potential. This technique eliminates dangerous voltage differences that could otherwise cause severe electric shocks during an electrical fault.


 Crucial for Pool and Spa Safety: Equipotential bonding is a strict requirement for pools and hot tubs (covered extensively under the National Electrical Code) because water naturally conducts electricity. Bonding the pool shell, deck steel, water, and equipment prevents the buildup of "stray voltage" which can be lethal for swimmers. 

What is Utility Neutral to Earth Voltage?

 Utility Neutral-to-Earth Voltage (NEV), often referred to as stray voltage, is the electrical potential difference between the grounded neutral conductor and the earth. It is an inherent characteristic of power distribution systems where the utility neutral is grounded at multiple points. 


 Understand the NEV occurs because current flowing back to the substation causes a voltage drop along the utility neutral. The goal is not zero volts, but rather ensuring that all accessible metal surfaces share the same voltage to eliminate dangerous step or touch potentials.  

Equipotential Bonding Testing Procedures.

How to Confirm Equipotential Bonding

To confirm equipotential bonding using utility Neutral-to-Earth Voltage (NEV), you measure the potential difference between bonded metal parts and "remote earth". In a correctly bonded and grounded system, this voltage difference should be minimal (typically less than 2 to 10 volts), indicating that all objects are at the same electrical potential. 


  • Setup Your Equipment: Use a high-impedance digital multimeter. Because you are measuring relative to earth, you may need a long test lead (such as 100 feet of 18 AWG) connected to an isolated remote earth reference stake driven into the dirt well outside the influence of the local grounding system. 


  • Measure and Compare:
    • Measure the voltage between the electrical service neutral (or local ground bar) and your remote earth stake.
    • Measure the voltage between various bonded metal parts (pool rails, equipment casings, rebar grids) and the same remote earth stake.
    • Verify that the voltage on all bonded metal parts is identical to (or within 1 V to 2 V of) the service neutral/ground reference


  • Continuity Verification: Voltage readings alone can fluctuate with utility loads. Always use an ohmmeter (with power disconnected) to verify < 1 Ω of continuity between the bonded parts and the main grounding bar to confirm a solid physical connection
